What SUP paddleboard should I choose?
Beginners and recreational paddleboarders choose mostly the buoyant, versatile, larger, and more stable boards that can carry even two lighter surfers. As for paddles, they choose the positioning ones, about 160-220 cm in lenght, made of aluminium or fiberglass. Generally speaking, the lenght of the paddle should exceed the height of the paddleboarder by approximately 20 cm.
Women: size 10 '6 "+, 80+ cm wide, rounded shape, thickness 10+ cm, displacement 240+ l
Men: size 10 '8 "+, 85+ cm wide, rounded shape, thickness 10+ cm, displacement 280+ l
Children: size 9 '8 "+, 75+ cm wide, rounded shape, thickness 10+ cm, displacement 190+ l
What is important when choosing a paddleboard?
Length - the longer, the faster / the shorter, the easier to handle; fast long boards start at about 11'
Width - the wider, the more stable; wider stable boards start at 80 cm
Thickness - the thicker, the greater weight capacity; for weight capacity of 100 kg you need an approx. 12 cm board
Shape of the front part - the more pointed, the better directional guidance
Shape of the rear part - the more oval, the more stable / the more angled, the more manoeuvrable
Displacement - larger displacement means better stability; stable boards start at a displacement of about 230 litres
Number of fins (flosen) - the more fins underneath the board, the better stability and control (usually 1-4 flosen)
