Go! (Book III)
The third volume of Otakar Husák's memoirs begins with his plans for the future. After the fighting for Slovakia ended, he wanted to leave the army, go into business, and get married. However, President Masaryk had other plans for him! Husák thus continued his service, was promoted to general, and, alongside Minister Beneš, participated in negotiating the first alliance treaties in Yugoslavia and Romania. The young republic, however, was plagued by political instability, which culminated in the formation of Jan Černý's caretaker government. On the president's recommendation, Husák was appointed Minister of National Defence. He thus became the builder of the army, for whose overall future he had to fight on all fronts. The book details the controversies and discussions in parliament, the senate, and the press of the time, while also introducing some of the now almost forgotten politicians of that era. Through correspondence and preserved documents, he also revisits the situation and history of the Czechoslovak Legion in Russia between 1919–1920. However, the immense work commitment and stress took a toll on his health.
