Who sews at Podolska?
The fate of the famous salon in the 1950s
In its heyday, the Podolská salon was associated with elegance and luxury. After its nationalisation in 1948, thanks to the patronage of Marta Gottwaldová, the former owner was allowed to remain employed in a subordinate position. Through the fates of the people connected with the salon, we can trace an era when models from Parisian fashion shows were replaced by red scarves and the rolled-up sleeves of Stakhanovite women. Elegance disappeared from the streets, but much worse was the disappearance of freedom and, quite literally, of people.
