Communication, argumentation, rhetoric
This book is about what could be called " rhetoric of belonging and understanding". More than convincing the other person of one's own truth, this is about understanding and understanding the other person. When meeting a person of a different opinion, it will be important to find and imagine their likely different starting points and positions and from there seek common ground with them.
One of the main aims of this book is to present interpersonal communication as a unique cultural event in which something great, sublime and extraordinary takes place. It is an event that reflects the characters and religious or philosophical attitudes of all involved. This is all the more true today, when the diverse multicultural environment is creating a completely new, much more challenging situation than in more culturally monochromatic times.
Interpersonal communication in all its possible forms is at once an art, a philosophy and a science, and in a sense also a work of engineering. It is a kind of bridge that must be built between two people who want to get along and understand each other. If they want to live together in the same country, they have no other choice.
The human word is a priceless gift. It is the art of saying the right word at the right time. This ability is a by-product of cultivated life experience and philosophy. Anglo-Saxon style " practical hints and tips" corresponds to a sensualist, empirical and pragmatic conception of life and is naturally at home across the Channel. On the European mainland, the thinking is somewhat different. There has always been a little more sense of theory, of the need to get beneath the surface of phenomena and to try to understand the nature of what one does and what one deals with. Based on the understanding of the theoretical side of the problem, one is able to deduce what this unique and unrepeatable moment requires of him or her.
Think of these words as an invitation into the magical world of words, with which man creates his world and co-creates the world of others. It is an attempt to support all good efforts to establish and develop a better communication style and thus better relationships between people than currently exist.
