From the author of the bestsellers Measuring the World and Tyll.
A masterful novel about a film director in the Third Reich, about art and power, about beauty and barbarism.
One of the greatest film directors of his time, G. W. Pabst (born 1885 in Roudnice nad Labem, grew up in Vienna, died there in 1967), is in France when Hitler comes to power. He flees to Hollywood to escape the horrors taking place in Germany. But under the dazzling Californian sun, his fame fades. Not even Greta Garbo, whom he discovered and made immortal with his films, can help him. And so Pabst finds himself, almost unintentionally, back in his homeland, in Austria, now called the Eastern March. The Reich’s Minister of Propaganda, Goebbels, wants the film genius to work for him, luring him with generous offers, where refusal is not an option. And while Pabst still thinks he can resist the temptation and that he will submit to nothing but the demands of art, he has long since stepped onto thin ice and become hopelessly entangled in the web of power.

“A great novel about moral failure.” (Die Zeit)
“Make peace with the monster, and it will reappear, in your own home, creeping up from the cellar, and then it will be too late. This is what Kehlmann recounts.” (The Daily Telegraph)
“The novel deals with a topical theme: passive collaboration with a regime.” (NDR)
