At the north wall

The time has come to pay the bills for the 1950s.

The mysterious Man with a Hole in His Heart carries unhealed scars on his body and soul throughout his life. The ancient crime that robbed him of his family in his childhood was never punished. Everyone has already forgotten or is trying hard to do so. Except for him. And the closer his own end approaches, the more urgently the stories of child victims of the communist regime emerge like ghosts from the depths of the mass graves of the Ďáblický cemetery.

In a hospice, the Nurse of the Dying helps her patients in the last moments of their earthly life. However, with a new client comes something to the institution that is beyond the understanding of the staff here. Will it be necessary to exorcise the devil from the asylum or from the consciences of old people who hide their dark past?

From the author of the bestseller The Sources of the Vltava

–––

The novel can be read as a detective story, albeit without a detective and without an investigation. In their place, there is an " avenger" who, even after all these years, has not forgotten or forgiven, and together with the reader, slowly reveals the destinies hidden under the tombstones of the Ďáblický Cemetery.
— Petra Klabouchová, author

Klabouchová' s words are heard just like larger sentence units, compressed into small chapters. These then mix in a complex but purposeful way over time. The frequent jumps in the plot are not demanding for the reader, but rather contribute to the drama. It is a treat to witness such masterful storytelling in Czech conditions.
