Auschwitz-Birkenau - it would seem that today we can add very little to this theatre of horror. And yet. Here is the true, if almost unknown, story of several thin and dusty books that got to that gloomy place by God knows how, and whose pages are held together only by a miracle and the willpower and courage of 14-year-old Dita Adler, the Auschwitz librarian, the keeper of the camp's wondrous secret. The story of literary Dita, based on real memories, now 80 years old, Dita Krausová, we return to the half-forgotten history of the family camp, which existed in Březinka from September 1943 to July 1944 and whose tragic end, though to this day shrouded in a series of unexplained circumstances, represents the largest mass murder of Czechoslovak citizens during the Second World War.
Spain Antonio G. Iturbe
(born 1967 in Zaragoza), cultural columnist, whose The Librarian of Auschwitz is his third major novel, has taken on a difficult subject, as a journalist does best - by honestly studying the available sources, in which the memoirs of Dita's friend, almost two generations older, play a key role, and raw reporting shorthand, which fills the white spaces in authentic memories and scarce historical documentation with literary fiction without pathos and only to the extent necessary. - In 2012, this title appeared at the top of the best-read novels in Spain and is currently being translated into other world languages.
