Come at dawn
Drink the wormwood and draw strength. Selected essays from 2002-2022.
This book presents "the best of Václav Cílek". This is a committee that maps the twenty-year collaboration of one of our most successful essayists with the Dokořán publishing house - from his first book Landscapes of the Inner and Outer (2002), which became a bestseller, to his last book of essays, How to Cross the River (2020). The aim was not only to pay a well-deserved tribute to the author, but especially to introduce his work to new readers. The essays are arranged in five thematic sections, which are intended to present the main areas that permeate Cílek's work: the landscape as a whole; genius loci of specific places; encounters with people, animals and mythical creatures; A description of the contemporary world with its problems and fears of where we are heading; and finally, lyrics about how to get out of it that give hope.
The author chose illustrations by Eva Brodská and Bohuslav Reynek and photographs by Hana Rysová for the book Come at Dawn. As Targetek's favourite Jorge Luis Borges writes: it's not so much important to read other books as it is to go back to the ones we've already read.
Václav Cílek
(* 11 May 1955) geologist, climatologist, writer and science popularizer. He graduated from the Faculty of Science of Charles University, the field of geology of deposits. Although his work is primarily concerned with climate and environmental change, the development of the Czech landscape and the interaction between nature and civilization, we find in his books overlaps towards literature, religious studies, of philosophy, of theology, visual arts or music of any genre. For Inner and Outer Landscapes and Makom. The Book of Places was awarded the 2004 Tom Stoppard Award. In 2007 he received the Minister of the Environment Award "for his significant contribution to the popularisation of Czech science, especially geology and climatology". In 2009, he was awarded the VIZE 97 Prize by the Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation for "his work has significantly broadened the human horizon, pointed out lesser-known phenomena and connections, helped to incorporate the results of science into general culture and deepened alternatives to the human view of the world, the cosmos and the fundamental questions of existence". Václav Cílek cooperates with Czech Radio and Czech Television, and has published over thirty books as author or co-author.
