Confessions of an Ageing Wreck Who Has a Dog

Dita is at the end of her tether

On the day of her birth, the drunken fates Anger, Saliva and Leaven predicted that our protagonist, Dita Hamáčková, would be an absolute good-for-nothing and would marry a prize-winning alcoholic from the borderlands, a catastrophic being. And so it came to pass, for—as we all know—you cannot escape your fate. The neurotic Dita is celebrating her fiftieth birthday, which is a big enough disaster for a woman in itself, but she also has to deal with an unexpected gift from her daughter—a completely unmanageable hunting dog. Within moments, the dog demolishes the already bleak interior of her country house and turns her life upside down. But other troubles are piling up: due to her dire financial situation, Dita is desperately looking for a job. She finds one in an obscure publishing house full of eccentric employees. Add to that her husband's passion for alcohol and motorbikes, and the fact that her daughter and son-in-law have sold their flat and are moving in with their toddler into Dita's tiny house, and it's no wonder that our protagonist is at the end of her tether.

Eva Michorová

Born in Kladno, she graduated from the local grammar school and then from the Faculty of Journalism at Charles University. She has worked for a wide range of newspapers and magazines, from Kladenský kovák at Poldi SONP Kladno to the ancient legendary Dikobraz and, for example, Nedělní Blesk. This quirky environment, full of curious, often half-mad characters, along with her original family, inspired her to write. She became known to readers as the author of girls' and humorous novels Waiting for the Prince (1996), Bára from the Castle (1997), Who Will Give Me a Rose? (1999), Ask No One (2000), All Water (2001), So, Girls, What Will You Do? (2001), One Single Night with Engineer Kužel (2004), You Can't Shoot Your Father-in-Law (2020) and others. She is the co-author of the book on parenting education The Stork Brought Us, I Guess (1992), the book about gambling The Sins of Big Gamblers (2000), and she contributed to the collection of true crime stories And Now We Fall, Boss (1998). By some miracle, she is still married and is currently a happy grandmother.
