Day of the Triffids
Trifidi: When plants attack humanity
A cult sci-fi classic.
A classic science fiction novel about the attack of mutant plants - triffids on humans. A great novel that carries a strong humanistic message and concern about the threat to the world we live in.
"When you wake up on the day, that you happen to know about, it's Wednesday, and everything around here looks like Sunday, you start to suspect, that something is wrong," says William Masen in the introduction to his famous science fiction novel. On Tuesday, May 7, the Earth was struck by a meteor shower from an unknown comet in its orbit, an event that blinded most of the Earth's inhabitants. But what literally came alive were plants of unknown origin, producing the oil needed to feed an overpopulated planet. Trifidi, synonymous with pain, of horror and suffering, aggressively attack people, who have to find a way how to go on living. They begin to organize themselves into groups, one of which is led by Masen, who has not lost his sight thanks to his stay in the hospital with his eyes glazed over. Although many decades have passed since the book's birth, it has lost none of its quality or timelessness. It is a still valid sociological, philosophical and psychological probe into a society where moral principles have ceased to apply and have been replaced by the will to survive.
