Discipline is destiny
A life lived according to pre-established rules, where order and routine prevail – that doesn't sound very appealing. However, the wisdom shared by the great men and women of history speaks of discipline as a way of life in which the purposeful person thrives.
The magic of discipline lies in the details – top-level basketball starts with properly tied shoes, but also with the ability to fall in love with routine and training.
The time to start is NOW. You must begin with the hardest thing, the thing you are least looking forward to. Not with reluctance, but briskly and with enthusiasm, with your body and mind prepared for hard work. Others are too weak and scared for this. That's their problem, but it's your opportunity. Because this is where you can win.
The second of the four books in the series on the Stoic virtues
COURAGE - DISCIPLINE - JUSTICE - WISDOM
What do Lou Gehrig, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Angela Merkel, Elizabeth II and Seneca have in common? Self-control, so firmly ingrained in their character that it seems they were born with it. Make no mistake. Discipline is a virtue we must choose, cultivate, and develop daily. This is how our lives can become an adventure where we hold the reins firmly in our hands, bringing satisfaction and benefit to ourselves and others.
“An excellent list of the virtues and values that every good leader in today's world must live by.”
– Admiral James Stavridis, former 16th Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO
