A gripping return to Kingsbridge during the plague epidemic
Also in this second large-scale story with a historical theme, Ken Follett takes us to the medieval English town of Kingsbridge, but roughly one hundred and fifty years later than in The Pillars of the Earth. This time, the greatest calamity to befall the human race will significantly interfere in the tangled fate of the 14th-century inhabitants of Kingsbridge, whose lives are inextricably linked to the running of two local monasteries and the commercial success of the Woollen Guild: an epidemic of a disease known as the Great or Black Death, a plague that wiped out nearly half of Europe's population at the time.

Ken Follett
(*1949, Cardiff, Wales) studied philosophy at University College London and then worked as a reporter (South Wales Echo, Evening News). Soon he began to write and became a popular and respected author of crime or espionage stories (The Man with a Strange Past, Kavky, The Hornet Flies in the Night, Snow Blindness, A Pass to Freedom and others). However, it was his extensive historical novels set in the medieval town of Kingsbridge that brought him worldwide popularity: The Pillars of the Earth (1989), which managed to regain the number one spot on The New York Times bestseller list eighteen years after its first publication, Forever (1997), which became the best-selling title in the world in 2008, and Pillar of Fire (2017). The first two books were adapted into a series. The author's trilogy mapping the turbulent history of the last century, simply and simply called Century (The Fall of the Titans, The Winter of the World, The Limits of Eternity), was also successful.
