Snowflakes fall on the town of Lost Creek, and a three-year-old boy is crying quietly in his car seat. His mother, cold as ice, lies slumped over the steering wheel. Madison Harper begins her investigation, resigned to the fact that she will not have the quiet Christmas she wanted to spend with her son and her father, with whom she has had no contact for many years. The fear in the eyes of the little boy, left motherless just before Christmas, haunts her, and she is determined to bring him justice.

When another dead mother is found a few days later, speculation begins that a serial killer is on the loose in the town. Two identical murders—it can't be a coincidence. Lost Creek is in the grip of a snowstorm, which is complicating the investigation, but could it slow the killer's next steps? Or is it quite the opposite, and does the killer revel in the harsh weather? Who else should start looking over their shoulder to make it to the new year in one piece?
