In the middle of the night, a fire breaks out on the Gingerich family's Amish farm, burning the old barn to the ground. As if that wasn't bad enough, the desperate parents discover that their eldest son, Daniel, has disappeared. Then, firefighters find human remains in the barn's ruins.
The case is taken on by Kate Burkholder, the Chief of Police for Painters Mill, in whose jurisdiction the farm lies. The initial reports are not good – the fire was most likely started deliberately. What's more, the autopsy confirms that the person who died in the barn was indeed Daniel Gingerich. Kate begins investigating the murder of a young man about whom everyone who knew him has nothing but praise. But all that glitters is not gold, and from subtle hints within the Amish community, the Chief of Police uncovers one terrible secret after another…
