Historian Záviš Brieftrager, who lost his job at Charles University after a series of false accusations, arrives in Přebuz to help restore an old timbered cottage under the supervision of carpenter Ilja Písecký. A gloomy atmosphere hangs over the Sudetenland town, surrounded by wild nature – and that's even before someone murders Ilja's girlfriend, Bianka.
Bianka's parents came to the border region from Romania, and she herself was involved in the anarchist organisation Antifa. Does the local neo-Nazi group have something to do with her death? Or perhaps the mysterious wolf cult whose members roam the area and paint their signs on church walls? Or is it an echo of history stretching back to 1945, when the German population was violently displaced?
Záviš, who had a soft spot for Bianka, begins an investigation that leads him to the Rolava tin mine and the notebook of Ota Braun, who helped prisoners in the Sauersack camp during the war. However, he soon realises that his hunt for the truth could easily turn him into just one of the many shadows forever wandering the Ore Mountains landscape…
Egon Trnka (born 1963) was born and lives in Prague. Although he studied history at Charles University, he did not remain in the field professionally. In the past, he has worked as a civil servant, journalist, and seasonal worker. He currently works for a multinational corporation and channels his love of history into his literary work. He began writing during the previous regime, but his first attempts did not pass the scrutiny of the era's censorship and ended up in a drawer. Although he didn't find time for writing for a long while after that, he never completely gave up on his dream of becoming a writer. He finally fulfilled it through the crime novel series, Místo činu (Crime Scene). Egon Trnka lives in a small flat in Prague's Holešovice district, where he is kept company by intrusive pigeons and a cat too lazy to scare them away.
