Little things like that

Trick or treat. Before Christmas Eve, life asks him if he is willing to repay what little generosity he has received so far...

Christmas 1985 is just one day away, but Bill Furlong, a coal, timber and peat merchant in the Irish town of New Ross, is still busily loading his goods. Although the ladies' household in the form of his wife and five underage girls forces him to enjoy the climax of Advent, the last neighbours still need to be provided for. They won't freeze! In addition, it is worth wishing the local heads a happy and merry holiday, because the angry worker does not know when it may be useful. Nor must the nuns of the convent, on whose intercession so much depends in the region - indeed, the happiness of the charcoal-maker's youngest daughter depends on it, but... But no sooner does Bill catch sight of the impoverished figure in the shed of the influential Catholic institution than everything clenches within him. He himself has been struggling since childhood only thanks to the charity of others, and suddenly he is again faced with a limiting situation. Can the unspectacular hero with the same determination break the circle of Evil, which always looks as if it is not dark?

A hauntingly Christmassy yet biting novel, nominated for the 2022 Booker Prize, this admired Irish novelist reflects on the conditions that still gripped her country in the late 1980s. Under the clergy, Ireland then was a far cry from today's model prosperity. Faith is unbelief, holidays are not holidays.

They wrote about the book Takové maličkosti

"With the same quiet fascination with which snowflakes cover the ground, this little book gradually builds up in us the unquestioning conviction that we are reading a future classic. Get it twice. Keep one and donate the other."

The Washington Post

"Keegan weighs her words and arranges sentence after sentence with such precision that she ends up delighting with a subtly subtle condemnation. The perfect art of hiding everything essential between the lines."

The Times Literary Supplement

"Pure beauty. An intoxicating and exciting Irish narrative from the lineage of those who transcend countries and eras.

The New York Times

"It is no longer a devastating observation as in the author's previous novels. Perhaps for the first time, the gracefulness of her expression is so hopeful, so illuminated - the complete opposite of the shadows lurking on the other side of the overcast small town." - The Guardian "Keegan's Christmas story suggests that the gifts we once received should be given to others. If they need it. (...) In few works by contemporary writers can we find such a connection: the earthy stories and the almost religious reverence they command."

Lidove noviny

"[The author's] work is characterized by a refined economy. He writes 'only' what he has to write, what is right and most important. (...) In her texts we find an exceptional depth. It lends a general validity to seemingly simple stories of ordinary people, which also applies to the central character of Such Little Things - a hero who 'started from scratch. According to some, even out of the negative. '"
