Love in a time of global climate change

Winner of the 2018 Magnesia Litera Prize for prose, the novel tells the story of a global village called Earth, the illogic of racism and the inscrutable ways of the heart

You've never been to India in your life, imagine that. Now you find yourself in Bangalore, India, amidst the noise, the smell, the traffic and the people, and you have no defence against it. You're in the safety of a hotel and a conference center, and yet you're scared as a little rabbit. You venture out and reach the slum. In the uncluttered crowd of women in saris, you will see an Indian girl in a plain T-shirt and jeans. You take a picture of it because it's the only thing that doesn't scare you. She notices and tells you in fluent English to delete her photo immediately. You shrug your shoulders, comply and put the whole story behind you.

The novella Love in the Age of Global Climate Change is about the global village called Earth, the illogic of racism and the inscrutable ways of the heart, and most importantly, how we all fear change while the biggest one is happening around us and over our heads.

They wrote about the book Love in a Time of Global Climate Change

"At the time, when Czech prose often lacks reflection on contemporary and social issues, is very refreshing, when the book comes out, which not only goes far beyond the geographical borders of the Czech Republic, but it also attempts to expose the stereotypes of how we think about the world, about it, what it means to be happy, and many others. "

Kamila Klímová, iLiteratura

"Josef Pánek's novel Love in the Time of Global Climate Change is like a revelation. It is a contemporary literary work that, in a peculiar flow of language, tries to formulate the uprootedness of today's man and to thematize the narrowness of racism and xenophobia from the perspective of a world citizen. "

Karel Kouba, A2

“. seems more mature as a writer than the author's first novel. Panek has found his style and sticks to it throughout the narrative. The long sentences, sometimes complex words and the purposeful repetition of words and phrases seem to refer to the short stories of Thomas Bernhard. Writing numbers directly in the text gives the prose a touch of modernity and the accelerated globalist times we live in. "
