Masters of the Word - Call of the Wild
Call of the Wild is set in Alaska and the main character is a dog named Buck.
The novel The Call of the Wild was first published in 1903 and tells the story of Buck, a St. Bernard and Scottish Shepherd cross. The story takes place during the Klondike gold rush. Buck, who is raised by a wealthy family in the southern United States, is sold as a draft dog to Alaska. Buck manages to adapt to the harsh conditions of working as a draft dog and the harsh northern climate. The story beautifully describes the wild nature of Alaska and the power of friendship between man and dog.
The Masters of the Word edition is full of literary treasures. Our best acting voices, who are so close to us, talk about their favourite books and important literary works that have reached them, influenced them and to which they may even like to return. Jack London
Jack London was an American novelist and short story writer, whose own name was John Griffith Chaney. During his lifetime, he worked as a sailor, gold miner, seal hunter, boilermaker at a power plant, member of the coastal fishing patrol, and war correspondent in the Russo-Japanese War, among other jobs. Just as Jack London's life was rough and adventurous, so are his stories and novels. All his life he struggled with drinking hard liquor, which was the cause of his liver and kidney disease. Jack London died when he was only forty years old.
