Audiobook No Future - Taking kids on a steam engine into virtual reality?
We are preparing children for a world that has irretrievably disappeared. We take kids on a steam engine into virtual reality and tell them it's good for them. This book argues the opposite and tries to show what means of transport are leading society into the future instead of the past.
There is a fun parlor game. Chairs are arranged in a circle and people stand around them. There are exactly one less chair than there are people. On command, people have to sit down - those who fail to do so are out of the game. He's got nowhere to sit. It is very much an allegory of life. Human society plays this game in the real world. The successful find their places in it, the unsuccessful move in the shadows of the periphery. The effort of education and training in this world should be to find as many places as possible for everyone, because too many people on the periphery turn the game into a predicament or even a horror. But what if humanity has reached a situation where the original rules of the game no longer apply because the chairs are not at hand, but are hidden somewhere in an uncluttered space out of immediate reach, and even still moving? To find them, you need skills, which you must acquire. But instead, you're learning skills that take you in a completely different direction. This is the situation we find ourselves in now and we are doing little to change it.
