Normal people
A worldwide bestseller that has sold over a million copies, unanimously praised by literary critics and legions of readers
Shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize, winner of countless Book of the Year polls - this is the novel Normal People by Irish author Sally Rooney.
Its main characters, Marianne and Connell, grow up in a small town, but that's where their similarities end: in high school, Connell is a star and Marianne is an outsider. Once they get together, it changes their lives. A year later they are both studying at university in Dublin.
Meanwhile, Marianne has become a party queen, while the insecure Connell is finding it hard to find his place in society. Although they move in different circles, they are drawn to each other like two magnets. As Marianne increasingly falls into self-destruction and Connell searches elsewhere for his purpose in life, both are confronted with how far they can go to save the other.
The novel Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. As in her acclaimed debut novel Conversations with Friends, Sally Rooney demonstrates a tremendous openness, insight into the depth and complexity of human life, as well as a sharp wit and sarcastic detachment.
Sally Rooney
Sally Rooney (born 1991) studied English at Trinity College Dublin; In her studies, she also studied political science and debating competitions. These three experiences - literature and art, political insight and the ability to argue - have been put to excellent use in her debut novel, Conversations with Friends (2017), which became an unexpected bestseller shortly after its publication and catapulted the author into the ranks of the most respected contemporary Anglophone authors. Her second novel, Normal People (2018), was even more successful with critics and readers.
