Sailing ships on vignettes

A new novel by a popular author and winner of the prestigious Magnesia Litera award

The distance between people can be boundless.

Marie, a forty-seven-year-old divorced associate professor of literature, finds herself in her sister's half-empty apartment in Český Krumlov over the summer. He commutes from there to the countryside to visit his seriously ill parents and in his free time he wanders among the crowds of tourists through the streets of Krumlov. He meets a young book buyer, Filip. Their budding romance breathes with the atmosphere of hot July and numerous literary connotations.

Above all, however, Marie wants to mend relations with her sister and take care of her parents - a domineering father and a mild, devoted mother. And deal with your loneliness. She sees it as being stuck in time, with memories from the past - and the prospect of old age on the other side. In the family tradition of strong male role models, Marie reflects on what has been, while wondering how to live on and what to do with "Shakespearean love"...

They wrote about the book Plachetnice na vignettes

Hájíček is linguistically sophisticated, has a sense of drama and can "hold" his point until the last paragraphs of the narrative.

Milan Jungmann, Tvar

Hájíček is a master, all he needs is a hint to characterize the man and the landscape, he can spread the plot and capture human nature with a single dialogic exchange.

Klára Kubíčková, MF Dnes

Jiří Hájíček

He grew up in the South Bohemian countryside, where he later worked. He currently lives in České Budějovice. Since the late 1990s, he has published three collections of short stories, Breakfast at the Refýža (1998), The Wooden Knife (2004) and Memories of a Village Dance (2014), and novellas The Green Horse Thieves (2001) and The Football Diaries (2007).

Hájíček's first novel Dobrodruzi mainstream was published in 2002. Both of the author's subsequent novels, Selski Baroque (2005) and Fish Blood (2012), were awarded the Magnesia Literary Prize. His loose "rural trilogy of moral unrest" culminated in the novel Dešťová hůl (2016), which won the Lidové noviny Book of the Year poll.

Jiří Hájíček is one of the most successful contemporary Czech writers. His books have been published in English, German, Italian, Hungarian, Croatian, Macedonian, Belarusian, Polish, Ukrainian, Serbian and Bulgarian. In September 2016, a film based on his book The Green Horse Thieves premiered, and since April 2019, a theatrical adaptation of the novel Fish Blood has been playing at the South Bohemian Theatre in České Budějovice.
