Severka
She grew up believing that only danger lurked beyond the borders of her homeland. Still, she had to go there.
The protagonist of the first novel by Nina Špitálníková, author of Testimony of Life in the DPRK, lives in South Korea, although she was born in North Korea. The story describes her painful journey to freedom, the sins of the past, and the doubts that accompany her throughout.
In this kaleidoscopic story, we learn about the perspectives and fates of prominent figures in the North Korean regime as well as people from the bottom of society. Thanks to this, the novel North asks serious questions that go far beyond the borders of the Korean Peninsula. The basic one is: What can an individual sacrifice for their own freedom?
