Sherlock Holmes and The Lament of the Innocent
The year is 1891, and a Catholic priest arrives at 221B Baker Street...
However, he utters only two words, "il corpe", before suddenly dropping dead on the floor.
Although the police surgeon declares cholera to be the cause of the man's death, when Holmes learns of another priest with similar symptoms, he begins to suspect they were both poisoned. He and Watson discover that both victims were sent from the Vatican to investigate a miracle—it is said that the body of the eighteenth-century philanthropist and slave trader, Edwyn Warwick, has not decomposed in its grave.
But should the Pope canonise a man who grew rich from slavery? And when Warwick's body is then stolen, it becomes abundantly clear that the priests' mission has attracted the attention of a deadly conspiracy…
This latest case for one of the most beloved characters in world crime literature comes from Cavan Scott, the author of many bestsellers and television shows.
