Závish, a historian without a job and a labourer without illusions, arrives in Frýdlant to work on the restoration of the local castle. He expects a routine gig: adjusting the rampart, a bit of stonework, and plenty of time for beer. But Frýdlant is a town with a history, the Wallenstein Festival is approaching, and it wouldn't be Závish if he didn't get tangled up in something again.
First, he gets into a scrap with a local brawler, then he loses a library book, and finally, he discovers a mysterious dagger that bears a striking resemblance to a 17th-century artefact. When the body of one of the fencers is found during the ongoing festival, it soon becomes clear that this very dagger is the murder weapon.
As a self-proclaimed investigator, Závish cannot escape another case. Once again, he stumbles between cynicism and justice, beer in hand and dark demons in his head. But this time is different… A red-headed beauty gets involved in the case, thoroughly turning Závish's head.
A thrilling detective story full of old grievances and melancholy, smelling of malt and dusty chronicles.

Egon Trnka (*1963) was born and lives in Prague. Although he studied history at Charles University, he did not remain in the field professionally. In the past, he worked as a civil servant, a journalist, and a seasonal worker. He currently works in a multinational corporation and channels his love of history into his literary work. He began writing during the previous regime, but his first attempts did not pass the censorship of the time and ended up in a drawer. Although he didn't find time for writing for a long time afterwards, he never completely gave up on his dream of becoming a writer. He finally fulfilled it through the crime novel series Crime Scene. Egon Trnka lives in a small flat in Prague's Holešovice, where he is kept company by intrusive pigeons and a cat too lazy to shoo them away.
