First-Hand London: Stories You Won't Find in Guidebooks
For several years, Czech Television's foreign correspondent Lukáš Dolanský reported daily on British society and local events. This book of observations from London summarises his experiences, but also reveals the behind-the-scenes work of a foreign correspondent. What was the atmosphere like outside Buckingham Palace at the very moment Queen Elizabeth II died? What stories did King Charles III's classmate, who lived with him in a university hall, share? And why was Karl Marx at the beginning of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan's relationship?
The vividly told stories are also interspersed with personal and family struggles in Britain. Readers will learn what it was like to experience Brexit first-hand, what went on behind the scenes when filming with the last Czechoslovak war veteran in England, what Sigmund Freud used a clothes peg for, how gin almost wiped out an entire city, and where to follow in James Bond's footsteps in London.
The book also includes a few tips for places that Lukáš discovered in London, places he grew to love, and places you won't find in any tourist guidebooks.
