Near Benešov u Ploučnice, the cousin of Mark of Vartemberk builds Ostrý Castle, also called Šarfenštejn, for the monarch. From the beginning, the construction is accompanied by difficulties, so Marek asks for help from his brother-in-law Oldřich from Chlum. But before Oldřich of Chlum can take up his duties, the town clerk is murdered in Benešov. According to his wife, the murder was committed by robbers who were hanged the night before in Děčín.
But the bodies of the hanged men have disappeared. People are intimidated and especially no one wants to talk to the royal authorities. Oldřich of Chlum is also opposed by influential relatives of Hynek Berka of Dubá, who control estates in the area. The evil seems to be growing and the dead are increasing. Oldřich of Chlum and his helpers have to search mainly undercover this time.
