At 3.37 a phone call wakes up the hero of the novel and a night call with his mother stirs the surface of his memories. It takes him back to his adolescence in the Moravian town of Přerov, to the experiences of a young queer boy growing up in a conservative industrial town, in a family with no money to spare. An environment emerges that punishes difference.
The hero literally unfolds his memory, like looking at old photographs and searching for small details that often reveal more than what is obvious at first glance. It tells about her mother, father and grandfather, about bullying, alcoholism or coping with a different sexual orientation. He breaks down not only his own memories, but also a kind of collective memory of the whole family.
Křehký debut is a unique attempt to bring the themes of world literature into the Czech context. Also, in terms of style, it could easily rank alongside the work of artists such as Ocean Vuong or Édouard Louis.
Marek Torčík won the prestigious Magnesia Litera 2024 Award in the prose category for this book.
Even though Torčík served you more or less a show of despair, you feel, that the characters want to love, he ends up begging for forgiveness from the grandfather and the working mother, who is plagued by migraines, you believe, that he loves his son, he just doesn't want to face any more "abnormality", such as his homosexuality or his relationship with the "gypsy". - Reviews and Reflections - Reviews from issue 2/2024
