If it doesn't break your heart, it's not love...? For fans of The Stars Have Not Favoured Us and Before I Met You
No family is ideal. Each has its own problems. Nineteen-year-old Maddy divides her life between working in a photo lab and caring for her younger autistic sister B, who requires round-the-clock care. She takes care of her together with her mother and is resigned to the fact that it will always be like this. She doesn't have time for friends, for boys, for things that others her age normally do. The last thing on his mind is love. But she's okay with it. Family is the most important thing. Nineteen-year-old Albert would disagree, however. All he dreams of is to leave home, away from his father who will never praise him. Albert, he says, is just a bum and a slacker who never gets anything done. Away from the brother who revels in insulting everything and everyone.
One day, Maddy and Albert meet, and this meeting changes the way they see everything. Albert begins to tease the somewhat distant yet charming Maddy. The closer they get, the more they realise that they are not alone in their problems and that they can give each other the courage to change things. For the first time in his life, Albert learns how strong the family bond can be. They fall in love, but besides love, there is one more difficult test. How will they deal with it?
With wit and deep insight, New Zealand author Tammy Robinson reflects on the way, how we can make our dreams come true, over the price, we're willing to pay for it, and the power of love, that allows us to find our true family.
