Based on years of experience, I would recommend the mid-range to high-end models from the Republic of Gamers line by ASUS. We test our CPUs on the ASUS MAXIMUS IX APEX .

The right juice
A quality power supply plays the lead! A good and stable voltage for your motherboard makes a world of a difference. We test our top CPUs on the Seasonic Prime 1200w Platinum. When it comes to power supplies, it is not so much their total capacity that matters but rather their quality and overall design. For overclocking, I personally recommend the Seasonic power supply. The latest Prime series is especially good for the purpose of overclocking.
Our tips for achieving the guaranteed clock rate
- Set the kernel voltage settings to manual mode in the UEFI to achieve a more effective power supply than the offset and adaptive mode can offer.
- In the External Digi+Power Control settings, use ASUSdesek LLC level 6, to prevent unwanted voltage drops that could interfere with the overclock stability.
- Kaby Lake processors are highly temperature sensitive, so use quality AiO water cooling size 240mm or better and a high-quality thermal paste. The stronger the cooling, the better the results. The cooling also depends on the airflow inside your case, meaning that if the airflow isn't optimal, the processor cooler won't function properly either.
- A quality power supply that provides stable and accurate voltage is absolutely essential. We recommend the Prime series Seasonic power supplies.
- The overclocking of our top CPUs requires at least some experience and basic understanding of the issue. Keep in mind that turning an overclocked system into a stable mode is no plug and play and requires patience and effort.
- All processors have undergone at least 1 hour of the RealBench stress test by ASUS, which uses AVX instructions, among others.
Final recommendation
In order to achieve the guaranteed clock rate, it is imperative to follow our tips as close as possible. Keep in mind that you may fail to achieve the guaranteed frequency with an imperfect combination of components. The differences in the motherboards amount to dozens of millivolts, which goes hand in hand with the increase in processor temperature and the demand for cooling as well as the overall performance.
