The ECC technology checks the integrity of data stored in the memory, transparently and in real time. It is able to detect and correct an error in a single bit, and discover an error in two bits. Some memory controllers can repair errors of greater magniture, in cooperation with ECC memory. Most server boards require ECC memory support. Memory reaches maximum control of data transferred in collaboration with parity checking. Parity lies in that some supplemental information (the so called parity bit) is added to the single-byte word, thus allowing to verify the authenticity of transmitted data.

Registered memory is equipped with a controller that oversees access to individual memory modules and facilitates the work of the memory controller on the motherboard or in the processor. On the outside memory looks like a single module - the register chip - that is responsible for writing and reading from individual memory cells; the controller receives the outcome of these operations. This increases the efficiency of memory access and the processing speed, even when more memory modules are being used simultaneously. Some server boards require registered memory.
