A girl with a passion for indigo
Strong women can do great things.
The true story of a tenacious and determined young woman who must deal with intrigue, male supremacy, and a forbidden relationship in South Carolina in the second half of the 18th century.
The year is 1739 and only sixteen-year-old Eliza Lucas is given the family plantation in South Carolina by her father. Shortly thereafter, his father hears the call of the Crown and sails to fight for its interests. The mother does not see the future as promising and the development of her daughter's farming business gives her the right idea. However, the indomitable girl discovers that growing a plant that produces indigo, a beautiful blue dye that French merchants pay big money for, could save them. But Eliza has no idea, how to grow the plant, and the only man in the whole wide world, who knows, African slave, he doesn't want to help her. A girl has to overcome prejudice, no matter why, she's a woman, or that she's a slave owner, or just a girl, that goes beyond the limits of what passes for polite behavior in the 18th century. But Eliza doesn't give up and gets the old gardener from the neighborhood, a lawyer from the city, and a black young man excited about her dream, with whom she agrees that the two outsiders must help each other. He teaches her to process indigo, she teaches a group of his friends to read and write. The author has written the true story of a determined, tenacious and courageous woman who did her part to change the conditions in the American South.
