It is October 1918 and Jindřich Kališ, an experienced gendarme, is investigating the murder and rape of a young woman, a worker in a local textile factory, in Lomnice nad Popelkou. But the great history refuses to take any notice of one ordinary gendarmerie investigation. Gendarme Kalis and his unusual assistant, Anna Malíková, a textile worker, has to quickly find her way in the new era, when states break up and others emerge, Loyalty is often more than expertise and revolutionary confusion can overwhelm anyone... Against the background of a specific story of a gendarmerie investigation, the author conveys the reality of 1918, when the Czechs wanted Czechoslovakia, The Germans of Deutschböhmen and the country were surrounded by hungry and faceless deserters, who wanted anything but the continuation of a senseless war.
