Fresh out of prison, Tadeáš, a man in his early thirties, decided to make a new and better start. But to do this, he needs at least a minimum income, a roof over his head and the support of his loved ones. But what if he doesn't have any of that? A temporary solution is offered to him by working for a drug dealer in Prague's Smíchov district, which sets off a whirlwind of events, at the end of which he faces either a fall or the hope of redemption.
The novel The Angels on the Subutex Don't Fly depicts a subculture of distinctive characters moving around Prague's Anděl. Lukáš Zárybnický presents not only a raw and linguistically authentic, but also an unexpectedly poetic insight into the lives of people from the margins of society. Drug users and drug dealers meet prostitutes and homeless people, but also police officers and psychologists from low-threshold facilities. In addition, a manhunt is on for a killer who is selling subutex mixed with chemical drain cleaner to desperate junkies. In mortal danger, the only way to rely on the help of a true guardian angel...
This existential prose on the subject of drug addiction, like Radek John's Memento or Jáchym Topol's Anděl, shows the flip side of one of the most vibrant places in the Czech metropolis. Away from the anonymous crowd, there are short-cut reactions, strong elbows and demagoguery of local politicians. Without making light of substance use, the author seeks to understand different worlds based on his own experience with clients seeking a life reboot. The result is a gripping story about things that happen in the shadows of our ordinary lives.
