The critical edition of Bedřich Smetana's student diary is the first complete edition of this unique source on the early period of Smetana's life. It covers the period of his grammar school studies in Prague and especially in Plzeň (1840-1843) and briefly the earlier years of his childhood and youth and the following period until 1847, when he completed his musical education and began his independent life and artistic career. In the absence of other major sources, the diary is de facto the only source of information on this period of Smetana's life, but also on the wider social context of the time. The text of the diary is published in German original and in Czech translation, the notes are in Czech and English. The introductory studies in Czech, English and German provide a detailed overview of the gradual accessibility of Smetana's diaries, a view of Pilsen in Smetana's time, Smetana's biography in the mirror of his diary, a characterization of the German of Smetana's diary and editorial principles. The publication is equipped with a pictorial appendix, an overview of sources and literature and indexes in the form of brief annotations.
