It is the 1840s and the United States is expanding its territory further and further west. Young Bernard is sent by his father to Oregon to adjust to the hard life of a settler with his uncle. A seventeen-year-old young man has an unexpected adventure: together with his uncle Eugene and the hunter Harvey make an exploratory journey down the river towards the coast, but their boat is swept out to sea and eventually wrecked. The crew is rescued but finds itself in the wilderness and has no choice but to walk back to the white settlements. On the seventh day of the journey, the men find a dead Indian on the shore. No sooner do they bow to him than the Kwakiutl Indians surround them and accuse them of murder. In order to save their lives, the whites try to track down the real killer, and without knowing it, they get lost in the labyrinth of the Indian world, so different from their own...
