Cats from 311 Squadron

A Great War, Little Paws, and Unexpected Heroes

Could ordinary cats have influenced the aerial battles of the Second World War? Of course they could! And in a big way!

The hangars at Honington are not only a base for Czechoslovak airmen fighting against Germany in England but also home to two cats, Čertina and Božka. The two felines live here quite peacefully in the company of their human friends until two intruders appear at the airfield: the German rats Helmut and Jürgen. They are evil, fanatical, albeit rather comical and foolish, admirers of the German leader, Hitler. Their dream is to build a great army and harm the enemy airmen. For the cats, neutralising the expansionist rats is a matter of honour! In their fight against the rats, they don't hesitate to team up with their age-old rivals, the dogs. A great battle is brewing… Humour and suspense are guaranteed!

Dalibor Vácha, author of historical novels mainly focused on the two world wars (e.g., the novels Vilda, Smrt na kůru, M + B + M), has written his first book for children.

Dalibor Vácha

Dalibor Vácha (b. 1980) studied at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, first earning a teaching degree in English and History, and then a doctorate in Czech History. His main literary focus is on the great wars of the twentieth century and the fates of Czechoslovaks within them. He has written the novels Červenobílá (2014, awarded the Book Club Literary Prize) and Cestou (2016) about the First World War; and Hranice (2015) and Hoří už Praha? (2017) about the Second World War. As he has not forgotten the speculative fiction he grew up with, he has also published the post-apocalyptic novel Nikam (2016) and the short story collection Jizvák Jim a další noční můry (2018). A year later, Argo published his novel from the legionnaire environment, Za svobodu, followed in 2020 by the war novel about the famous "Three Kings", M+B+M, and in 2023, the novel Vilda, about the Czechoslovak middleweight boxing champion Vilda Jakš.
