The first part of the Saga of a Century trilogy
The story of four friends born around 1900 and living in Hamburg is a rich family saga set against the backdrop of two world wars and the tragic German history of the 20th century.
Helping to bring a new - peaceful - generation into the world is the goal of Henna Godhusen, who in the spring of 1919 begins training as a midwife at the Hamburg women's clinic Finkenau. She is just nineteen, but she has already been through a world war. Now, finally, there is peace and Henny feels a great longing for life. Her fate is intertwined with that of three women: her rebellious childhood friend and colleague Käthe, Ida, the daughter of a wealthy family, and the young teacher Lina.
And we can watch with suspense as these different women cope with their not always easy personal lives, the rise of Nazism, the twists and turns of world politics and, ultimately, World War II.
Daughters of the New Age is the first part of a trilogy that covers the entire 20th century. After its publication in 2016, the book became a bestseller in Germany according to Der Spiegel magazine and remained at number one for more than a year; has achieved similar success in Italy. Its author Carmen Kornová is often referred to as the "German Ferrante".
