Dead wood full of life
If you think that dead tree trunks or branches are completely lifeless and useless, that they must disappear from the forest and have no place in the garden, you are deeply mistaken. “ Dead wood“ is teeming with diverse life, as this beautiful book eloquently tells us.The author offers a fresh perspective on the role of dead wood in nature and introduces many biological connections.
It is divided into three parts – First, it explains the important role that dying wood plays in the wild and breaks down many preconceived ideas that are unfortunately harmful to our environment.
In the second part, it deals in a detailed, yet entertaining way with the animals that benefit from dead wood and without whose decomposing activity the balance in nature would be significantly disturbed.
And the third part is practical – what to do with dead wood in the garden. The offer here is wide. You can build a natural fence or an insect house, mulch, leave the logs with cavities for nesting birds, a pile of branches in the corner of the garden will provide shelter for all sorts of animals, the interestingly shaped branches will beautify your flower bed or rock garden, The wooden palisade will protect you from the curious glances of passers-by, peeled bark to line the paths, the hollowed-out trunk serves as a great natural pot for succulents.
Inspirational indeed, this book is a lot for any ecologically minded person! And who is just a little familiar with the meaning of „ dead“ wood and recognizes its importance to the environment, it cannot escape its unconventional charm and beauty.
