This methodological publication focuses on physical activities that support the development of motor competencies in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The authors draw on many years of experience in teaching physical education and working with children with disabilities. The publication contains a set of field-tested, health-oriented exercises to develop motor and social competencies in children with ASD. Specifically, these are remedial physical education tools (releasing, stretching, strengthening, relaxation and breathing exercises), psychomotorics and movement games. The exercises are focused on the development of motor skills that can be maximally utilised in everyday life (functional skills), the development of correct posture and coordination.
The authors build on proven physical activities for typically developing children and apply them to the specific needs of children with ASD. The aim is to improve their motor and social competencies and support their integration into everyday life. The publication highlights the lack of methodologies for working with these children and emphasises the importance of an individualised approach, visualisation, structuring of exercise lessons, the use of appropriate motivation to exercise, and a variety of exercise aids.
The book offers valuable insights for teachers, therapists and parents of children with ASD who want to focus on improving motor and social competencies through targeted physical activities.
