Dune

Cult sci-fi novel Dune

The story of Dune is set in the far future in an interstellar empire ruled by the Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV. of the House of Corrino, to whom all the great kings are subordinate. Young Paul Atreides - heir and heir to the House Atreides - travels with his father, Duke Leto, and mother, Jessica, to Arrakis, a desert planet that is the sole source of an extraordinary spice, the most important and valuable substance in the universe with wondrous properties. House Atreides is to administer the planet after it was abandoned by their old enemies, the Harkonnens. And that is when the multi-layered interaction of the complex world of politics begins, religion, ecology, technology and human emotions, all in an attempt to take over Arrakis, because that one, who controls Arrakis, controls the spices as well.

This is the second time I've read this book. And it had the same effect on me, perhaps even more so, than when I first read it many many years ago.

One of my favorite science fiction visionary books.

Well, when you say classic science fiction, I automatically get the hair on my head, what kind of obsolete crap is it going to be again. But! The dune is really polished. Perfect. From the impression one would expect it to have been written at least in the nineties and lo and behold, it's old and very good. It all fits together. The psychology of the characters is, in my opinion, basically unsurpassed. Maybe it's mainly good because the setting in which it takes place is actually very simple, no one is chasing any technology whose ideas just inevitably become obsolete in older sci-fi.

Recently, I've revisited two titles I read in the 1990s. It was the Witcher and Dune. While Sapkowski's The Witcher, Frank Herbert's The Fall of Frank Herbert spoke to me perhaps more strongly in Dune than it did when I first read Dune sometime in the late 80s/early 90s.
