Eponyms in medicine or who the word is after
This book is an original contribution to the literature dedicated to the history of medicine. Through the private and professional lives of individual protagonists, the author illustrates the complex paths of partial discoveries against the backdrop of their time. It is a research of exceptional personalities who, with extraordinary enthusiasm and humility, advanced human knowledge, often under very bleak formal and financial conditions. In the 18th and 19th centuries, practitioners, and especially clinicians and researchers in academic environments, had minimal technical or laboratory facilities.
The text is structured into three parts. The most extensive section summarises diseases, syndromes, and tumours in the field of internal medicine. The second part focuses on similar conditions in other medical fields. The final section is dedicated to eponymous personalities who left their mark by describing certain phenomena, associated symptoms, and characteristics of clinical conditions, including those who went down in medical history as the initiators of various forms of examination procedures, techniques, medical aids, or instruments.
The publication is intended primarily for doctors and pharmacists, both in undergraduate and postgraduate studies, but it may also appeal to the general public interested in the history of medicine in general.
