Eretz Israel
Israel is a country, a state, and also a phenomenon – the geographical centre of the spiritual world for all Jews. It is the “link between the earthly and heavenly worlds.” The central place of three world religious systems. A country with a rich past and present. In the heart of the Oriental world, it represents a piece of the “West” in the Middle East, a piece of Europe, even Central Europe. It is also a successful and unprecedented example of the transformation of a former colony into a country that is a leading scientific, technological, medical, and cultural power. The eyes of Jews all over the world are fixed on Israel. Citizens of Slovakia also follow events in Israel with increased interest. The ties are many; several thousand people whose roots are in Slovakia live in Israel, have family and friends there, and have left a part of their lives there. The reverse is also true; there are several thousand people in Slovakia who have relatives or friends in Israel. This book talks about Israel, the history of Israel, the origins of Christianity, and about Jews, who are often better known in the world than in Slovakia. Jaroslav Franek (1946) is a former university lecturer at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics of the Slovak University of Technology. From 1990 to 2013, he was the spokesman for the Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities. He is the author of professional works in physics and electrical engineering, as well as articles on Jewish issues. He is one of the founders of the Institute of Jewish Studies at Comenius University in Bratislava, where he led courses on the general history of the Jewish people. He has written the books Judaism and Israel · Palestine, which have been published in several editions.
