Europe's rack and pinion and overland cableways

Funicular and rack railways are not only a popular means of transport, but often also very interesting technical and technological solutions. In Europe, most of them can be found – perhaps unsurprisingly – in the Alpine countries (especially Switzerland), but remarkable lines can be found all over Europe, including Czechia and Slovakia.

This lavish publication focuses mainly on railways that are in regular operation: the history of their creation, technical aspects and interesting facts, complete with historical and contemporary photographs and maps of the lines. The overview is supplemented by a technical introduction to the issues of railways overcoming challenging ascents, an explanation of the term “inclined elevators”, a description of interesting defunct or transformed lines and also brief tourist tips. A ride on a funicular or rack railway can become one of the greatest experiences on your travels around Europe!
