Sano Ichiro is facing the most dangerous case of his career. Who tried to murder the shogun?
We're in Japan, it's 1709... Shogun is old and sick. Sano Ichiro, once the second man in the state, is stripped of his high office by court intrigue and demoted to a lowly city patrolman. And not only that. His marriage is also in ruins. He doesn't even know his wife Reiko anymore, let alone why his long-time rival Yanagisawa has made an incomprehensible alliance with the Shogun's nephew and successor Ienobu, whom he should hate. What's behind it?
"An incredible conclusion to this iconic series!"

And then an incredible crime occurs. Someone tries to murder the shogun. In his sleep, in his own bedroom. And the weapon is also completely unusual. The attacker stabs him several times with a fan with sharp metal spikes. Sano is once again in the centre of the action. He's got the most important and dangerous case he's ever had to investigate. If he displeases the Shogun's successor, who does not like him at all, he will be sentenced to death with his whole family.
Even the family of his chief courtier and friend Hirata, who abandoned her when he became the plaything of dark forces unleashed by a secret society, depends on San's help. He's failing them more and more... And even the children won't make things any easier for Sano and Reiko, especially since they're no longer children.
Sano unexpectedly finds himself at the centre of a rebellion, in the midst of a civil war that threatens all of Japan. Enemies become allies and everything comes to a stunning denouement...
