Frantisek Pavlicek: The Lark

The farmer wants to bring his youngest daughter a live lark, which she has wanted so much. But they will pay a high price for the lark: as a punishment, Katuška must go to the forest to a monster in the form of a lion who speaks human language. But in the darkness of the night, the terrible beast turns out to be an enchanted prince. When Katusha shines a candle on it, it turns into a pigeon and flies away. Only her love can save him. Can Katusha overcome her insidious fear and not lose faith in the belief that nothing in the world is in vain? One of the nearly 250 fairy tales written down by the Brothers Grimm is this fairy tale, dramatised for radio by František Pavlíček. Like the Grimms, he had a sense of language and fairy-tale magic.
