Walking is one of those human abilities we take for granted - until it starts to fail. Only then do we realize how delicate and yet extremely complex is the balance between the nervous system, the body, space and experience.
The monograph Disorders of Gait and Stability is the first publication in Czech literature that grasps this phenomenon in its entirety: biological, clinical, technological and existential.
Bipedal walking was one of the key milestones in human evolution. She freed her hands, opening up space for instruments, language and culture. This book is based on the belief that understanding gait disorders cannot be reduced to an isolated symptom: Walking is an integral manifestation of the functioning of the nervous system, cognition, emotions and human identity.
Under the guidance of experienced editors, the publication brings together more than twenty authors from the fields of neurology, rehabilitation, biomedicine and philosophy and is aimed primarily at professionals in these fields. The editorial team is based at the Henner Neurological Clinic, where they have been researching gait disorders for more than 20 years. The general part systematically presents anatomical, neurophysiological and kinematic principles of gait and stability, their ontogeny and changes during ageing. It offers a clear classification of disorders, a practical differential-diagnostic discussion and detailed guidance on clinical examination, which originally combines neurological and physiotherapeutic perspectives.
Significant attention is paid to modern methods of gait and stability assessment - from clinical tests to quantitative analysis using stabilometric, accelerometric, camera and multisensor systems.
A special section focuses on gait and stability disorders in muscle disorders, peripheral nerves and spinal cord, cerebellum and vestibular apparatus, in spastic paresis, extrapyramidal diseases, multiple sclerosis, of normotensive hydrocephalus, functional neurological disorders even in old age.
Gait and stability disorders are not just a body of knowledge. They are an invitation to a deeper understanding of the movement that shaped man.
