The blinded John of Luxembourg interferes in political intrigues in Europe to pave the way for Charles to the imperial crown. Meanwhile, Louis the Bavarian sits on the Roman throne, whose victory over his Habsburg rival was mainly due to King John, but instead of gratitude he received only hostility and betrayal. Ludwig expelled Charles's younger brother Jan Henry from Tyrol and married his son to the heiress of Tyrol, Margaret. The usurping policy of Louis the Bavarian causes outrage in the empire and Charles, the future heir of the Bohemian kingdom, is soon elected as the new Roman king.
This plot-rich novel with dozens of exceptional historical characters culminates in the unfortunate battle of Krescak, where King John died heroically. However, his son Charles, now adorned with the dual title of King of Rome and Bohemia, was on the losing side in this battle, and between Krescak and the power base in Bohemia lies the territory of the arch enemy.
Ludmila Vankova
Ludmila Vaňková, by her own name Paukertová. She is a novelist and author of historical novels. She was born on 9 May 1927 in Prague. In 1942, her father was executed by the Gestapo. She studied sociology and psychology at Charles University, but in 1948 she was expelled from the Charles University Faculty of Arts for political reasons (member of the National Social Party). She graduated in 1968-71. First she worked as a secretary in various publishing houses (European Literary Club, Čs. writer), later as an editor (Albatros). In 1968, she joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, then resigned the following year, and worked as a switchman at the Karlštejn railway station from 1973 to 1977. She did not publish until 1977, and has been a full-time writer since.
Pavel Soukup
Czech actor and dubber. He originally graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Charles University. Then he started to study at DAMU. After school, he worked mainly in regional theatres, but later returned to Prague, where he began performing at the ABC Theatre. He has also starred on television. Pavel Soukup dubs actors such as Robert Redford, Gérard Depardieu, Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis.
