Gate of Fate
The last novel of the queen of mystery novels & the last case of the detective duo Tommy and Ribbon.
From the complete list of the works of the queen of detective fiction Agatha Christie, it can be seen that she began and ended her literary career with the story of the amateur detectives Tommy and Ribbon. The mystery novel The Secret Adversary, in which she first brought the inseparable married couple to the stage, was published less than two years after her literary debut in 1922, and the spy plot referenced events of World War I. She returned to her favourite heroes intermittently throughout her life and they grew old with her. The Beresfords' last story, The Gates of Destiny, already dictated by protracted illness, brought her venerable work to a close in 1973.
In this novel, too, she has capitalized on the knowledge and predilections of her youth. Christie has been an avid reader since childhood, and this time she planted her first clue to the crime in the form of a mysterious word cipher in an old book. That's where Pentlička discovers her, as she sorts through the bundles left by the previous owners of the house in the English countryside where she and Tommy have moved for their retirement.
Christie's next lead came from her war experience. In 1914-18 she served as a volunteer in a British Red Cross unit and after passing her examination she worked there as a pharmacist's assistant. She knew the effects of dangerous plant substances and the poisons themselves. And poisonous fern leaves from the new house's garden are the next clue to a crime that will lead Tommy and Dandelion back to the days before World War I. That's why so often, in their search for the killer of Governess Mary Jordan, they discuss the details of their previous cases in The Secret Adversary and N or M?, in which they themselves faced down powerful spy networks with determination.
Shortly after its publication, the book was hailed by the critic Maurice Richardson in The Observer on Sunday: "The past and the present are impressively intertwined here. Despite a certain political naivety, it is a true masterpiece, with a stellar performance by the Manchester terrier Hannibal."
