I. A. Goncharov: Oblomov

In 1859 Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov published his Oblomov. The novel was warmly received for the way it captured the spirit of the times and caricatured its ills. Oblomov is incapable of anything, neither career nor love, and wastes his life in passivity and inactivity. Because of his indecisiveness, Oblomov is often compared to William Shakespeare's - albeit much older - Hamlet. To the existential question "to be or not to be"? Oblomov would say no. In 1979 the reading was staged as a sequel by director Josef Melč, the role of Oblomov was played by Rudolf Hrušínský. Also performing are Jiří Adamíra, Josef Kemr, Bořivoj Navrátil, Peter Kostka, Vlastimil Brodsky, Gabriela Vránová, Vladimír Ráž and many others. The reading rightly belongs to the Golden Fund of Czech Radio.
