I Sleep in Hitler's Room

The audiobook I Sleep in Hitler's Room, by Tuvia Tenenbom, translated by David Weiner. Read by Otakar Brousek Jr., directed by Ondřej Černý. They commissioned a beautiful book about Germany from him. They thought everyone should admire them because they are the most righteous and just people in the world. But the dear Germans were dead wrong! Because no one less than the phenomenal, beloved and cursed Tuvia Tenenbom entered the scene. And he broke the Germans down into their prime factors and atoms. He is able to look beneath the surface and discover things that others don't see. For example, that the brilliant design our neighbours and technology lovers so like to show off is just a veneer, from under which a dark past peeks out. In their proclaimed love for other cultures and foreigners, have today's Germans forgotten the six million dead Jews? Did they suddenly start loving them after centuries of hatred? But let's leave the Jews aside. What are today's Germans actually like? To find the answers, the Israeli-American author travelled the length and breadth of Germany. He spoke to hundreds of people, from ordinary folk to top politicians, from activists to captains of industry, from drug addicts to hoteliers, from Nazis to do-gooders, from rabbis to imams, from Turks to East Germans, and on top of it all, he slept like Hitler. He asks all of them clever and seemingly naive questions to provoke them – which he often succeeds in doing – and find out what they really think. He then pieces together a picture that is an unusually witty and at the same time alarming report on today's Germany, a country the whole world looks up to. If there's one thing Tuvia Tenenbom is not, it's politically correct. His book is full of amusing dialogues and insightful observations. But behind all the humour, there are often surprising and cruel truths we would rather not know. Tenenbom is neither left-wing nor right-wing; he simply wants to know the truth. And so he irritates absolutely everyone.
